On the weekend of Saturday 16th June the largest 7’s rugby tournament in the county took place at Frome RFC. 50 teams made their way to Frome 7s to take part in their annual 7s competition which took place across 6 pitches. 32 referees or referee coaches also made their way to allow the day to run smoothly. 22 members of society were in attendance on the day.
The event started on Friday evening with a great game of full 15-a-side game of rugby between Aniers RFC, a Somerset based side, against Gentleman of Albion RFC, a touring side from all over the country. The game was a great advert for Barbarians style rugby which was greatly officiated by Matthew Bowditch and his two assistants, Dave Mealing and Warren Bowditch, with Aniers RFC showing the crowd how a 7’s style of rugby could win any game of rugby with them running in tries starting within their own 22.
On the Saturday the referees were split between the 6 pitches by referee organiser, Harry Garmston, who started the day off with a short brief on the expectations for the day. Each pitch had its own level of rugby with pitch 1 having the open level, highest level, which has teams travelling a long way to take part in a RFU 24/7’s Secure Trading qualifying round. Pitch 2 and 3 had ladies rugby 7’s on, pitch 4 & 5 had social men’s rugby being played on it with pitch 6 having a super social level of rugby on it, with many of the teams taking the social side of rugby to the next stage. All main cup finals of each level of competition took place on pitch 1 with the balcony full and spectators enjoying some great rugby. Cup Finals were referee by Adam Wookey (Open), Rob Owen (Social), Paul Connolly (Ladies) and Wayne Davis (Super Social).
Harry would like to thank all referees for their commitment throughout the day.
We would like to thank Bristol Society, Dorset & Wilts Society and Devon Society for their help in making the event such a success on the refereeing front.
